Electric Boilers
As the name indicates, an electric boiler is powered by electricity rather than by a traditional fossil fuel such as gas or oil. It works by passing the water through a heated element, thereby warming it to the required temperature before flows on through the rest of the central heating system. The heating element is designed to maximise the area through which the water is heated for the most efficient results. Electric boilers come in a number of different varieties, which include electric combination or combi boilers, system boilers and flow boilers. Combi boilers are useful for supplying hot water on demand, whilst system boilers are a good option for larger properties, and flow boilers combine heat generation with power.
There are many reasons why an electric boiler can make an excellent choice for a central heating system. Avoiding the reliance on fossil fuels means that an electric boiler is a more sustainable choice as it has a far lower carbon footprint in comparison to gas or oil fuelled boilers. It is also an extremely efficient way to generate heat, which makes it an economical option too. In simple terms, with an electric boiler, you pay for the amount of power that you will receive as heating energy- so if you pay for 1 kW of electrical power, you'll enjoy a full 1 kW of heat. For properties that have solar panels installed, an electric boiler may be run, at least in part, from this power source, which can make it an economical and environmentally friendly way of heating the home.
Other benefits of an electric boiler include a reduced need for maintenance. This is because, unlike other types of boiler, an electric boiler contains no moving parts, which may be subject to malfunction or need replacement due to wear and tear. It is also a much safer option, thanks to its use of electricity rather than combustible fuels such as oil or gas. An electric boiler cannot suffer from a potentially hazardous gas leak or explosion.
For the boiler engineer, another key advantage of the electric boiler is that it is simple to install and without the need to install a flue. This lack of a flue system means that the electric boiler can be installed almost anywhere in a property, which can be appealing for homeowners or property developers.
